The ongoing situation at Bayou Corne is very unfortunate, and condolences are extended to the Assumption families who have had to leave their homes. Salt domes like these occur naturally all across the Gulf Coast and in coastal regions worldwide, and failure of the wall formation is extremely rare. Even rarer still is the failure of a side wall; this is the first instance of such a collapse.
Bayou Corne has people in the state talking about what lies beneath, but what many still don’t understand is how important those salt domes are to industry in Louisiana.
