We transform products from nature – salt, water and natural gas – into chlorine, which becomes a necessary ingredient for myriad life-enhancing products. Our industry and the products we make are vital to our lives, our state and our economy. Chlorine chemistry is essential to everyday life by providing dependable, affordable and durable products made from materials manufactured right here in Louisiana.
Chlorine is a naturally occurring chemical element, one of the basic building blocks of matter. It was discovered in 1774 by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, and given its name in 1810 by the British chemist Humphry Davy. The name “chlorine” comes from the Greek word “chloros,” meaning green, referring to the color of the gas. Over the course of many decades of careful research and development, scientists have learned to use chlorine and the products of chlorine chemistry to help make drinking and swimming pool water safe, destroy life-threatening germs, produce life-saving drugs and medical equipment, protect police and fire fighters in the line of duty, ensure a plentiful food supply and much, much more.
